ByBlacks.com: How Internalized Racism Ruined Dating for Me (Article)

Gwenna wrote a personal essay for ByBlacks.com about her experience unpacking white supremacy while dating as a Black woman in Toronto.

In this personal essay I wrote for ByBlacks.com, I share my experiences growing up in predominately white spaces that shaped my perceptions of dating, romance, and connections with other people. I explore how prioritizing Black spaces, Black connection, and Black excellence helped me process the experiences I’d had “Dating While Black” (to quote Hadiya Roderique).

This emotional development helped me develop a stronger sense of self-worth, explore and accept my identity as a Black bisexual woman, and deepen my understanding of why it is so important to create opportunities and spaces to honour our identities.
